Stuart

Has anyone ready Stuart Little recently? We picked up the E.B. White classic at our church garage sale last week and I started reading it before bed the other night. (a side note: I have been reading lots of children’s books before bed because they seem to clear my mind rather nicely. I like to read before bed, but if I am too into the book, I can’t put it down and I end up reading hours beyond my bed time. I don’t have that problem with children’s books. I have recently enjoyed 4 or 5 Ramona books, a Roald Dahl book, and a few others.)

Back to Stuart. I had remembered the book was about a small talking mouse who was adopted into the family and the family had a crazy time trying to adjust to such a small person. If that is what you remember, maybe you should keep that memory and not read the following spoiler. The first paragraph of the book reads,

When Mrs. Frederick C. Little’s second son arrived, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse. The truth of the matter was, the baby looked very much like a mouse in every way. He was only two inches high; and he had a  mouse’s sharp nose, a mouse’s tail, a mouse’s wishers and the pleasant shy manner of a mouse.

Does anyone else find this really disturbing? The woman gave birth to a mouse! Maybe I am more disturbed by this because the actual birth giving process is more on my mind with close friends having babies (say hello to Sam)…or I am a woman who is capable of giving birth and someday could have the vision of Mrs. Little in my mind when I am in a hospital. I had to read the passage a few times to make sure they were actually saying that she gave birth to the mouse. But there seems to be no way around it, Mrs. Little gave birth to a mouse. Disgusting.

I think it would freak me out more if I wasn’t thinking about how much easier it would be to give birth to a mouse than a baby. How tiny… that was a weird thought to have in my head, though, I’ll be honest.

I’d been reading your RSS feed for so long, but when you mentioned the new background, I had to come over and look. I do approve, highly. Me likey.

P.S. More pictures of Panther. :-)

The whole giving birth to a mouse thing is kind of creepy but aside from that the book is much better than the movie. I only saw the movie once (and only watched about 3/4 of it) but if I remember right, the only similarities are that the family has one kid who is a mouse.

Becca, I also thought about how easy it would be to give birth to a mouse. I also wondered how big she got as a pregnant lady. Did she know that she was going to give birth to an unusually freakish small baby? Did she feel pain like in the birth of a child?

As far as Panther pictures, check out Tim’s Panther page. I think I will also post more about her on my blog, though.

Abby, I couldn’t remember the movie. I keep thinking about “The Littles” cartoon. That was a great cartoon.

Okay, we are all a little wierd! I too was think how much easier it would be to give birth to a mouse and my babies weren’t very big! I too have many questions, but they all fall under the too gross to share category!

In the movie, I believe Michael J. Fox was the voice of the mouse. We’ve seen the movie many times and I thought it was cute, but now I should go read the book - maybe skipping over the part where she gives birth to the mouse.

I agree - I think I had many questions that came up that seemed inappropriate for the pubic sphere.

Another question that hasn’t come up yet deals with Mr. Little. What’s wrong with him? Did he question his manhood after helping to conceive a mouse?
