Winter Tour
This weekend we went to the Hudson River Valley in New York. We toured around FDR’s home and enjoyed the products of the CIA. (Not the actual CIA as I first thought, but the Culinary Institute of America.) We ate well on our trip. Much of our trip was meant to be enjoyed during nicer weather. Lots of places were closed for the season or advertised for their summer/fall views of the valley. The hiking and biking trails seemed like they would have been great in weather that was warmer than the 30 degrees we were experiencing.
On the other hand, we did not have to chose which things to visit and which things to save until later because there was not much choice. Don’t worry, we found plenty to do. FDR’s home was definitely a highlight.
So tomorrow I head back to work after my week long break - that is unless we get a snow day.
It’s Cold Outside
Since our sleet storm on Valentine’s Day, it has been cold and windy. I am amazed at the “snow,” which is really white ice. When you walk outside, you don’t hear the lovely crunch of snow under foot…you hear nothing because your weight is not breaking through the snow/sleet/ice. It is the strangest thing. I keep wanting to have my feet be wet and hear the crunchy snow, but instead my feet are mostly dry because the snow is unbothered by me and my shoes. The snow has been in this state since Wednesday. Everyday, I keep thinking it will be the day when the snow will melt and be crunchy, but that day has not yet come.

School was cancelled today due to strange/bad weather. I think we are experiencing a sleet storm. Being outside is painful - cold wind and sharp icy things hitting you. There is a large accumulation of snow - but it is basically really fluffy ice. Either way, I am so glad to have a snow day. All the teachers were excitedly talking about school being cancelled today. I can’t imagine how horrible everyone would have acted if we had to go in today after talking all day about not coming in.
I have all ready spent the morning in a coffee shop, met my husband for lunch, and wandered around Barnes and Noble. I love having mornings and afternoons free during the week. I think I was not made for traditional working hours, though I can tough it out for a while.
For now, I will brave the weather and enjoy my time off. Maybe the roads will still be bad tomorrow?!

My family likes to get things right. We like to analyze, experiement, and fully understand each action and reaction. I have to admit that there is an Iverson perfectionism streak that runs through my parents and my brothers. At times, this personality trait can come out in the strangest ways.
I recently bought a pair of shoes that has a sole which forms to your foot. I have worn these shoes everyday to work and have loved them. They do not hurt my feet even after standing or walking all day long. My back also seems to be in better shape than with other shoes. This past week, my perfectionistic/obsessive personality kicked in. Everyone knows I drive almost and hour each way to work. Well, this means that I am sitting in the car for that long with my feet at odd angles while I drive - especially my left foot which is rolled slightly to the left because of the steering wheel. I have become consumed with thinking that this strange angle is going to mis-form my shoes and make the left shoe fit differently than the right shoe. I also caught myself trying to measure any fit differences throughout the day while I was standing and walking.
Since I realized the damage I might be doing to my shoe I have had to come up with alternative ways to hold my foot while I drive. Most of my alternatives have not been very comfortable. Tim suggested riding without my shoes on, but the weather is too cold for that. I can only hope the damage will not be fatal.

I drive to work in a semi-busy two lane freeway. When driving on a semi-busy road, the slow lane/fast lane rules don’t work too well. The left lane is no longer just the passing lane, it is the lane where people drive slightly faster than those in the right lane…but usually we, in the left lane, can’t drive too fast because there are other cars in front of us (who by the way, are driving about the same speed as others in the left lane).
But then comes the mean old bully. Sometimes the bully is a Mercedes and other times the bully is a minivan. They come up really fast behind you and want you to merge in the the right lane so they can move ahead another hundred feet and bully the next guy into scooting over. It makes me feel like we are back in junior high and in the lunch line. We are all waiting for our hot dish surprise, but someone comes up and cuts in front of you - even though you are the last person in the line. They have to wait just as long as you, but they got to eat 15 seconds sooner. It is annoying to scoot over in line when the result of their bulling does not get them anywhere except for one place ahead.
I also have to wonder about the ethical nature of letting the bully zoom by. Should I enable the driver by scooting over, thereby allowing him to break the law (and I mean break it worse than my 5 miles over the speed limit )?
Either way, I agree with the kids at my school - bullies are hard to stand up to.
