Christmakkah

November 21st, 2006

Every city in Connecticut has a green - a large grassy city center. The greens used to be church burial grounds (many of the greens have the city’s first church), but most of the cities have moved the gravestones to another place, creating a park! No, they did not move the bodies. So in the middle of New Haven is a beautiful green which is home to summer concerts and night movies and many people walking through the town. Greens are one of my favorite parts of New England - despite their dark past. I love seeing the city open up.

Currently, the city is putting up a huge Christmas tree. The tree looks like it was transplanted into the center of the grass. I suppose a good ol’ Christmas tree stand just won’t do it in this case. The other day I was walking through the green (with no coat - it was upper 60s) and saw a crew of 8 men and 2 large utility trucks, both with cherry pickers, working on the lights for this tree. I felt like soon all the characters from the grinch would soon be surrounding the tree and singing carols.

NTV Cribs

Finally, you can view our apartment on Flickr. I will now admit that the photos we posted in August of “Our New Home” were a joke. We went to Newport, Rhode Island and toured around some crazy mansions from the Vanderbuilt clan and other richees from long ago. Those houses were beautiful, but not quite like our current house.

Movie Etiquette

November 15th, 2006

Tim and I haven’t been going to many movies since moving to the east coast, so when we do go, we want it to be a great experience. Last weekend, we treated ourselves to a movie, but the experience was not such a treat. We saw Babel - not the most kid friendly movie (tought themes, slower, and nudity) but one family decided to bring their 2 kids under 11 and a newborn baby whom they seemed to think would sleep for the show. Well the middle child was bored out of her mind. She was in front us and bouncing up and down in her seat…which was making a loud squeak. She was a few rows in front of her parents so every few minutes she would turn around and do one of those loud whispers to get her parents attention. Especially when they were doing something with the newborn (who was already making noises). The baby actually did really well, especially when the parents stood up with her so they could bounce her. The family finally gave into their bored kids and left half way through the show.

So we all thought we would be able to concentrate a bit better. Except for that group of older people who came in late and were louding talking through the show. At one point, one of the ladies left to go to the bathroom and stepped on someone’s toes, making her squeal and apologize so everyone could hear. After the movie was over, she complained about the time she wasted watching the show. She did insinuate that shw would not be coming back to a Hollywood movie for a while. Good news for all.

Either way, we enjoyed the show. A slower movie…so if you are a 10 year old girl or baby or older woman who doesn’t like Hollywood, Babel is not the show for you.

What Are They Talking About?

November 8th, 2006

I have been continually amazed at the growing number of cell phone users. If I am sitting in a coffee shop and looking outside, I rarely see a person who is walking without talking on their cell phone. I would like to give you a ratio here about how many people are using cell phones, but I am not good with numbers and don’t want to ruin my entry with over-exaggerated terms.

Everytime I see a person walking and talking I wonder a few things:

1. Are people purposely talking on their phone while they are in public so others can see how popular they are? If so, that is a lot of work! Leading to the next question…

2. What are they talking about?! I definitely talk while I am walking, but never more than quick conversations. These people are talking on their phones every day and they are always walking somwhere - so are they making up things to talk about or do they just have that much more to say than I do?

3. Has the cell phone replaced the friend? People are either with people and without their cell phones or they are alone and talking on a cell phone.

In most cases, I am usually wondering what they have to talk about all the time.

DMV Disasters

November 1st, 2006

After three months of living in Connecticut, the DMV has finally given me new liscense plates. Our previous experience getting driver’s licenses was awful, we spent over 8 hours in line merely to get our eyes tested before they would let us take our picture. Yes, it was hot and neither of us were in the best picture taking mood. Since that day, I have been trying to get CT plates on our car. I have been sent away from the office at least six times.

First they didn’t believe me that the three pieces of paper I had saying the car had no lien, then they didn’t take the bank statement saying the lien was actually cleared because it wasn’t on a letterhead from the bank. Then the bank copied the wrong VIN number on the letterhead lien release. In another attempt I accidentially made a scribble mark on the title so that became void and I had to sign a bill of sale to me from the Nicole Iverson me. Anyway, today they didn’t even bother to look closely at all the papers I finally got in order. The woman just assumed I had everything and asked for her money. Cash only.

It was a big day. I have had Montana plates on my car since I was 14 (they start ‘em young in MT). The plates are of a similar color palat, but I feel a loss. My car now has a Montana decal, a Minnesota Public Radio sticker, and Constitution State plates. I think we have officially moved in.
