I’m Employed?
On Wednesday I received a desperate phone call from a school district about 30 miles north of us asking if I was still looking for employment as a guidance counselor. I say yes and she asks if I would be interested in being a substitute for a unknown amount of time. It could be just one day or could be all year - when can I come sign the papers. So I went on Friday for my first day as a high school counselor for a school of about 1200 kids.
The whole thing seems a little sketchy. Most people I ran into at the school assumed I was taking over for the previous guidance guy. I heard from the principal that the guy has been pretty unreliable for the past 3 years and they are getting sick of him. So, enter Nicole. I will be filling in until they know more, but there seems to be great potential for a full time position I just have to decide if I actually want the job.

On Labor Day we decided to have some adventure. The day began with searching out a local flea market. I think I had dreams about a flea market being much cooler than it was. TLC’s Trading Spaces has shown me that I can find great things at a flea market for a small price, unfortunately I couldn’t find those great things. One guy did try to sell me NASCAR racing cards (which reminded me of Kevin), 2 for a dollar. There was also lots of groceries and dirty non-antiques. The adventure was interesting, but a little depressing.
Later that afternoon, we went to the Odyssey Greek Festival. we ate many wonderful homemade treats and saw some traditional dances. As we were driving around looking for parking, we heard some kids yell out, “Montana! Who comes here from Montana?” I was quickly reminded of being drug to some boring events with my parents, like a tractor show. I would have been thinking a similar thing if I saw a car with a license plate from Connecticut driving around looking for parking. Despite the kids negative attitudes, we had a great time.
Life of the Jobless and Not-so-Famous
I am still without employment after being in Connecticut for about a month. I have interviewed a few places and applied to many, many places. I have a few good things I am waiting on, but waiting has become a daily thing. Not working makes the days feel very long. Tim and I have been taking lots of walks and finding free activities to spend our time (like Shakespeare in the Park on Friday, which was actually Robin Hood - meaning it wasn’t funny and they sword fighted all over the stage), but there is a few more hours in a day that need to be occupied.
Tommorrow is Labor Day and most people are excited to have a day off. I on the other hand would like to have a job to have a day off from. Though I would also take a vacation - those are nice.
On the Not-so-Famous side, Tim and I are not doing too well with attending the orientation and get to know you activites for graduate students. We tried to go to one get together last week, but the place was so crowded there was no room for us to sit. We stood awkwardly for a few minutes, then ran for our lives. Definitely not famous in New Haven.
