Church Tales
On Sunday, we went to an American Baptist Church. The church is about eight blocks away and in a beautiful old building. With the exception of one family, the attendees were mostly over the age of 60. The church was very liturgical (an episcopal baptist church?) and had one of the best sermons we have heard in a while. The pastor is a part-time family therapist at an adolescent counseling clinic down the street.
After church, most of the 30 people in church noticed that we were new and came up to say hello. One man approached me saying, “You must have a church background?” Meaning we would not otherwise wander in the doors? After talking with him for some time, his wife came up and said how nice it was that we were there and she understood that we would probably not come back, but it was nice to have us there for one sunday. She liked to see young people once in a while.
She’s right, Tim and I probably won’t go back next week but only because we should find a place we can find some friends and get involved, but we really did enjoy the sermon and talking with the people afterwards. I was sad to hear the negative attitudes about the church and wondered how they would ever change. Maybe we should go back soon just to prove them wrong.
