Least Likely to Succeed

Today I locked myself out of the house.

Locked out of the house, locked out of the car. I had Panther with me; we were on our way to her haircut appointment. In my arms I held two large books (Harry Potter 7 and an eighteenth-century treatise on God and evil), a notebook, and my coffee cup. In my pockets I had my cell phone, chapstick, a pen – but no keys.

Before today, if you had asked me to make a list of all the people that I know and list them in order of least likely to forget their keys, I would have immodestly listed my name first. I am completely anal retentive about checking my pockets for keys before I step outside, after I step outside but before I close the door, before I step into the car, after I sit in the car. I am always making sure I have my keys.

Somehow today I didn’t (probably because I was carrying everything instead of bringing my bag).

I did end up contacting some friends who I thought had a spare key to our house, but didn’t, but they lent me their car so I could get Panther’s hair cut. Then Panther and I went to the park and read (well, I read while Panther sniffed and people-watched and played in the grass) until Nicole got home.

Locked out of the house. That’s impressive. I usually lock the deadbolt, so it’s pretty hard to lock myself out of my house.

But I’m about as anal with my keys. I always get a little neurotic when Abby borrows them.

In high school, when it was much easier to lock your keys in the car, I used to carry a spare house key and a spare car key in my wallet, just in case.
