Inessentials

It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan.

Life, and Other Trivialities

It’s been a busy few weeks. I’ve had lots to do with my graduate studies, in which a number of projects reached a peak at the same time. For the last week, Nicole’s parents have been visiting us, as well. It’s been really fun to see them, to show them around New Haven, and to take them to New York, Hartford, and Cape Cod. Sadly, I wasn’t able to go to the Cape because of my firm commitment to pretending to work.

There is something strange in trying to show someone else your life. What do you show them? Of course, someone else being there changes the way you do things, but you can still approximate. So we cook and eat out, watch TV and read magazines, talk, and drink plenty of coffee. Plus we cram in all the stuff we rarely do (like go to NYC) to create a new-and-improved version of our actual life. It’s almost like I’ve lived three weeks in one.

It’s all about creating your alter-ego. Who would I like to be? What would I like my life to be like? Or, maybe more importantly, what would I like people to think my life is like? Maybe take them to an orphanage you “work” at (or, at least you would, in your imagined life). Or you could exaggerate how much your life is not like you would want it; like spend more time working on stuff than you normally do to make it seem like that’s normal. If you succeed, you’ll get pity; if not, pity. win-win.
